Pont du Gard & Villeneuve-lès-Avignon: Roman Heritage, Medieval History & Rhône Valley Wines
Here is what's in store for you
This is an exceptional and unique tour that captures the essence of Provence, from Roman times to the medieval period. The journey begins with a visit to the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century, which at the time was the tallest bridge in the world. It supplied water to the 20,000 inhabitants of the ancient city of Nîmes.
From here, we continue to the charming town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, located across the Rhône River and offering stunning views over the valley toward the city of Avignon. This is where the famous Pont Saint-Bénézet once ended, at the Tour Philippe le Bel, a 13th-century fortress tower.
Enjoy a guided walking tour with a visit to La Chartreuse, a medieval monastery founded by Pope Innocent VI in the 14th century and home to one of the largest charterhouses in France. The site features a harmonious mix of open and enclosed garden spaces, remarkable architecture, one church, three cloisters, 40 monks’ cells, gardens, and a chapel adorned with 14th-century frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti. The town also provides an ideal setting for a light lunch, with a variety of traditional eateries to choose from.
In the afternoon, we head north toward the renowned wine-growing region and the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. After a short visit to the village, you will meet a local winemaker to learn about Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines and their close historical connection with the Popes of Avignon in the 14th century. The experience includes a visit to the cellars followed by a tasting of some of the finest wines from this prestigious appellation.
The day concludes with a relaxed return to your hotel or villa.
