Avignon, the Palais des Papes & the Winemakers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Here is what's in store for you
For around 70 years in the early 1300s, Avignon was the center of the Catholic world. Its skyline forms a magnificent urban landscape, featuring the Saint-Bénézet Bridge (the famous Pont d’Avignon), the ramparts, the Petit Palais, the Cathedral, and the imposing Palais des Papes, flanked by four mighty towers.
The day begins with a visit to Avignon, where you will explore both the highlights and some of the lesser-known corners of this fascinating city. Enjoy a skip-the-line visit to the Palais des Papes, allowing time to uncover the secrets of this remarkable Gothic monument. After some free time for a light lunch, we head by car toward the wine country.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies at the heart of a region rich in history, culture, and joie de vivre. This unique and magical village appears like an island rising from a sea of vineyards. At its summit stand the remains of the ruined château—walls, tower, and lower hall—built by the Popes in the 14th century as a summer residence to escape the heat of Avignon.
In the afternoon, visit two renowned vineyards of the appellation. First, Château La Gardine, owned by the Brunel family since 1947, followed by Château Fortia, a historic family estate that played a key role in the creation of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in 1936. Through cellar visits and private tastings, you will be introduced to the iconic Rhône Valley wines, where tradition meets modern winemaking expertise. Taste award-winning reds as well as the lesser-known but equally remarkable white wines of the appellation.
After the final tasting, return comfortably to your hotel or villa.
