Beginner's Guide to Sicilian Wine: Tasting & Bites at Millesuoli Enoteca in Palermo
Here is what's in store for you
This tasting at Millesuoli Enoteca Siciliana is designed for anyone starting their wine journey from zero. You don't need to know anything about wine; you just need to be curious.
Your sommelier, Giuseppe Artale, will guide you through four glasses chosen to be easy to distinguish and understand. Instead of technical terms, you'll be asked simple questions, like 'Is it sweeter or drier than the previous one? What's the texture like?', to help you train your palate without pressure. The goal is to feel the difference in the glass, not just read it on a label.
The tasting represents the main styles of Sicilian wine production. You will sample a sparkling wine (Metodo Classico or Charmat), a fresh and mineral white like Catarratto or Grillo, a red such as Nero d'Avola or an Etna Nerello Mascalese, and a sweet wine like Zibibbo di Pantelleria or Malvasia delle Lipari. The exact selection varies based on availability, but always maintains this balance.
Each glass is paired with a small Sicilian bite to enhance the wine's character, such as local cheeses like primosale and pecorino, cured meats, seasoned olives, or 'pane cunzato'. By the end, you'll be able to recognize the basic differences between common Sicilian grape varieties and have a better idea of what you truly enjoy.
