Organic Wine Tasting with Local Meats at Speri in Valpolicella Classica
Here is what's in store for you
You will be welcomed by the Speri winery, who have been farming the hills of Pedemonte for seven generations. Your tour will be led by trained hospitality staff or, subject to availability, directly by family members Chiara, Giuseppe, or Pierfrancesco.
The experience begins with an introduction to the Valpolicella Classica region and the family's commitment to organic viticulture, which they will explain during a walk through the vines. You will then visit the cellar where the wines age, before settling in for the tasting. This takes place either in the main tasting room or at Casa Speri, the family’s recently restored historic residence.
You will have a guided tasting of five certified-organic wines.
The tasting includes:
• Valpolicella Classico DOC 2023: A bright, light-bodied red with notes of fresh red cherry, made from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes.
• Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2022: Fuller and warmer, re-fermented on Amarone skins to add body and a dried-cherry depth.
• Valpolicella Classico Superiore Sant'Urbano 2021: A concentrated and structured single-vineyard Superiore from the family's historic Monte Sant'Urbano cru.
• Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Sant'Urbano 2019: The estate's flagship, a powerful, full-bodied red made from grapes dried for months using the 'appassimento' method.
• Recioto della Valpolicella DOCG La Roggia 2021: The sweet ancestor of Amarone, a rich dessert red with notes of cherry preserve and chocolate.
Alongside the wines you're served a board of cured meats and cheeses from Corrado Benedetti, an artisan producer in the Lessinia mountains above Verona: Coppa "Profumi della Lessinia," Soppressa dello Schioppo (the sweet version) and Lombo al pepe rosa, with a six-month-aged Riserva Corrado Benedetti cheese and Grana Padano.
Children are more than welcome. Younger guests who aren't tasting are served soft drinks and water with the same food board as everyone else, and they're given illustrated sheets of the different stages of winemaking to colour in as the visit goes on.
