Full-Day Etna Wine Tour By 4X4 from Taormina
Here is what's in store for you
Meet your off-road driver and begin your transfer to Mount Etna.
Along the way, we will stop for a panoramic view of a unique canyon formed by basaltic lava—the Alcantara Gorges—shaped by the waters of the Alcantara River. The Alcantara’s vertical cliffs reach up to 30 meters in height, forged by intense geological and geothermal events. In prehistoric times, a river flowed here over clay sediments until a massive volcanic eruption channeled magma into the riverbed, forming the canyons we see today.
As we continue our drive, we will pass through small villages nestled on the slopes of Mount Etna, such as Castiglione di Sicilia, a charming medieval village perched on a hill overlooking the Alcantara Valley.
Traveling along one of Sicily’s renowned wine roads and crossing vast expanses of vineyards (Etna D.O.C.), we will arrive at a local winery. This is the perfect place to relax while enjoying a delicious snack paired with excellent wines.
Next, we’ll make a short stop at the 2002 lava flow, accessible by jeep along a winding dirt road surrounded by chestnut and oak forests. The eruption, which lasted from October 27th, 2002 to January 29th, 2003, is considered one of the most explosive eruptions of the past century. Our journey continues to the Ragabo pine forest, where, hidden among pines and brooms, we’ll discover the Corruccio Cave (1350 meters above sea level), a lava cave formed by ancient flows.
Continuing our ascent, we’ll reach Piano Provenzana (1800 meters above sea level), a ski resort and one of the sites most affected by the 2002 eruption.
We will then drive along the wine road of Mount Etna once more, crossing further expanses of vineyards before stopping at another local winery to enjoy a wine tasting and lunch.
Afterward, we will return to Taormina.
