Etna Trekking - Wild Trails & Wine Tasting at Maugeri Winery
Here is what's in store for you
Our experience, in collaboration with Etna Wild agency, begins with a comfortable pick-up directly from your accommodation (Taormina or Catania), before heading towards the eastern slopes of Mount Etna. From the very start, you will be immersed in the beating heart of the volcano's geological activity at the impressive Pernicana Fault, the most active fracture on Etna — an invisible yet powerful boundary that reveals how this giant "breathes" and evolves over time.
Continuing our ascent, we reach the craters of the 1928 Mount Etna eruption, where the force of the volcano destroyed the town of Mascali in just a few days. A powerful story of destruction and rebirth, deeply connected to Etna's wine culture and the noble Nerello Mascalese grape, which still thrives today on volcanic soils born from ash and lava.
But Etna also hides secrets beneath its surface. Equipped with helmets and headlamps, you will explore a fascinating lava flow cave, a natural tunnel carved by molten lava. Stepping inside feels like entering a silent underground world, where darkness and stone preserve thousands of years of volcanic history.
Back on the surface, we continue up to 1,800 meters, where we stop for a coffee break in a mountain refuge on the eastern slope, surrounded by wild and breathtaking landscapes. From here, a walk begins across a lunar-like terrain, exploring the lateral craters of the 1865 eruption. You will walk along their rims and even descend into one of the cones, discovering firsthand how a volcanic crater is formed.
After a morning filled with nature and fire, the landscape transforms: black lava fields give way to ancient vineyards. The experience continues at Maugeri winery, in the heart of the prestigious Etna Bianco Superiore, where you will enjoy a guided tasting of volcanic wines paired with local Sicilian delicacies.
Here, warmly welcomed by local producers, you will experience much more than a tasting: a genuine encounter with those who cultivate this unique land, transforming the power of the volcano into wine. This tour is not only about discovering Etna's geology, but also its anthropological soul — the deep bond between people and volcano, shaped by resilience, respect, and tradition. A complete sensory journey where nature, culture, and flavors come together between lava flows and glasses of wine, revealing the true essence of Etna.
